Handicapped Passengers

Deaf

Definition

Passengers who, due to their hearing impairment, must be identified for security reasons and to be provided with additional assistance (if necessary).

General Information

Deaf/hearing-impaired passengers do not require MEDIF and are considered self-sufficient if they are capable of communicating with the crew members. If they are not able to do so, their boarding must be in accordance with restrictions pertaining to the admittance of non-self-sufficient passengers.

Passengers who are deaf/hearing-impaired and blind are not considered self-sufficient as per this definition.
These passengers are permitted to travel with a helper animal without extra charge and such animals are not to be counted as part of the passenger’s luggage exemption if and when they are able to present medical certification stating that the helper animal is in fact necessary.

The helper animal (with muzzle) is permitted to travel in the cabin with the passenger. The passenger must present certification accrediting the animal as a helper animal, as well as the required health documents for the country of destination.

There are no restrictions regarding the number of helper animals allowed on board. However, the helper animals cannot be put together with other pets.

If the passenger is traveling with a companion, he or she can opt to keep the helper animal either in the cabin or in the holding area.

In order to ensure boarding, service confirmation from PETC or AVIH (whichever is relevant) is required on the reservation.
